Wind turbines have a variety of designs

Wind turbines use the wind in the air to turn aerodynamic blades that commonly look like propellers on an aeroplane. Some types of turbines have horizontal or vertical blades. The blades are connected to a rotor inside a generator and as the blades rotate, electricity is created.

Wind turbine owners often talk about the great feeling of knowing that every time it’s windy they are generating electricity and saving money. However, not every home is suitable to have a wind turbine. Whilst the coastal regions of the UK are often very windy and therefore suitable, other areas do not have sufficient wind to allow for a wind turbine. They simply would not be economical at present.

Wind turbines work best on a hill top with a clear exposure which is free from turbulence and obstructions such as houses, other buildings and trees. Wind speed increases with height so it's best to have the turbine high on a mast or tower. However, many planning authorities only allow the wind turbine to be fitted below the roof ridge levels.

Small-scale wind turbines suitable for urban locations are also available to install in homes, often to a wall on the outside of the home. Whilst it is not always practicable, ideally, a professional assessment of the local wind speed should be conducted for a full year at the exact location where you plan to install a wind turbine before going ahead.
