Air Source Heat Pumps
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
An air source heat pump is a unit that can help to heat or cool your home by extracting heat from the air in one part of your home and distributing it to another part.
Air source heat pumps work in the same way as a refrigerator and the principles are the same. Often an air source heat pump is placed in the loft or sometimes on an outside wall. As long as the air is above -15 centigrade, heat can be extracted from the air (outside or in the loft) and the heat then used to heat the home using underfloor heating or even radiators.
In summer it is possible to reverse the system so that hot air in the home is extracted and passed outside. Like all heat pumps Air Source Heat Pumps work best when supplying low temperature systems such as underfloor heating because underfloor heating only requires a water temperature of approx. 40 degrees C, whereas radiators require a much hotter temperature up to 70 degrees.
Air source heat pumps can also provide heat for hot water, especially in the summer when air temperatures are higher.
