Substantially reducing carbon emissions is of the utmost importance if we are to sustain our way of life and preserve the eco-systems upon which our civilisation depends.

The Climate Change Bill which is currently going through Parliament requires a 60% reduction in the UK's carbon emissions by 2050 with at least a 26% reduction by 2020. Prime Minister Gordon Brown has talked about a target of 80%. Some climate scientists are saying that even this level of reduction will be inadequate (see Recent News).

World demand for energy is growing strongly as countries like China, India and Brazil develop and the global human population grows. These and other factors are causing fossil fuel prices to rise.

In the UK we are having to import an increasing amount of our energy, as North Sea oil and gas production declines. Some of our power stations are coming to the end of their working lives but the new nuclear power programme will take many years before coming on line.

In short, the next 30 years or so will see dramatic changes due to:

  • The direct and indirect effects of global warming and climate change
  • Rising prices for electricity, gas and oil
  • Concern over the security of energy supply
  • Increasing legislation and carbon taxes

Businesses are now expected to have a robust and proactive corporate social responsibility policy. Many face multiple threats.
